Statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Srdjan Darmanović at the Event “Alliance for Multilateralism: Building the Network and Presenting Results”

26.09.2019 - Speech

Mr. Chairman,

I wish to thank our hosts today for launching set of initiatives that we consider to be important steps in the overall effort to strengthen multilateralism.

Montenegro strongly supports the Alliance for Multilateralism and we commend the efforts of France and Germany to transform the appeal of many states to protect the multilateral order into this informal movement set to produce concrete initiatives. We find that is just the right time to redouble our efforts, as we are celebrating 100 years of multilateralism and approaching the 75th anniversary of the UN, which lies as the cornerstone of today’s global order.

As a further step in our support to the Alliance for Multilateralism Montenegro endorses the initiative(s) (zavisno od nivoa podrske u sali, alternativno) all five initiatives:

  • Group of friends on ,,Climate and Security“
  • Gender at the Center Initiative ,,Put the gender equality at the center of education sector planning“
  • Call for Action to strengthen respect for International Humanitarian Law and Principled Humanitarian Action
  • International Partnership for Information and Democracy
  • Declaration by the Alliance for Multilateralism on Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS)

We share the concern for the status of today’s multilateral order strained by the rise of nationalism, unilateralism and series of events where international institutions failed to act successfully. The only way to preserve peace and security is to respect the international norms and to seek dialogue on different issue as we renew our commitments to the rules – based order.

Today we are facing numerous challenges that in an inter-depended world cannot be solved by states alone, no matter how big or powerful they are. The best way to tackle them is by joint forces of the international community as a whole. Every crisis is also a new opportunity to reform our institutions and to find new creative ways on how to better deliver the results we all expect. Key UN human rights and sustainable development documents, conflicts that have been prevented or stopped, show us the results we can achieve if we work together.

Montenegro stays committed to the multilateral frameworks based on the international law. Aware of their imperfections we still believe this is the best way to address current and future challenges, and provide peace, security and well-being for our societies. We support the Secretary General’s efforts to reform the Organizations in order to better fulfil its mission and to be ready for the word of tomorrow.

Montenegro remains committed to an effective multilateral system with a strong United Nations at its core. Our key goal is to be a reliable partner and to contribute to finding solutions for global threats as well as to strengthen the UN in order to be able to address contemporary challenges in the most effective manner.

Thank you.
