24 February 2020 - Ministerial Meeting in Geneva

Past Event

Under the theme „Promoting International Humanitarian Law and Fighting Impunity“, a Ministerial-level meeting in the framework of the Alliance took place on the 24th of February 2020 in Geneva.

At the margins of the High Level Segment of the Human Rights Council, the meeting focused on driving forward the Alliance on two concrete issues with particular relevance for our work in the Geneva institutions: the fight against impunity and the safeguarding of humanitarian space.

Working with states, relevant international organizations and partners from civil society, the meeting reflected on the contribution and progress made by the Alliance for Multilateralism on international humanitarian law and human rights. Aiming to defend, adapt and reinforce the associated multilateral institutions, the Alliance advanced the “Humanitarian Call for Action” by initiating the collection of concrete measures and best practices employed by states in order to better implement international humanitarian law worldwide. With the aim of improving the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need, best practices were shared.

Moreover, as one of the workstrands under the Alliance for Multilateralism, the Alliance against Impunity aims to respond to cases of serious breaches of international law and make sure that perpetrators are brought to justice. In Geneva, discussions were held on how the Alliance can promote accountability, in particular by reasserting international law and standards and strengthening the investigation and prosecution of individuals responsible of international crimes. Proposals for strengthening the cooperation between international investigative mechanisms (IIMM, IIIM and UNITAD) and national prosecutors were brought forward.
